TUBA: THE URBAN BARBER ASSOCIATION
I READ I LEAD Literacy Program
Literacy is not a luxury, it is a right and a responsibility.
If our world is to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century we must harness the energy and creativity of all our citizens.
President William Jefferson Clinton
“I will out read you therefore I will out lead you”. This simple but profound statement was made by Dr. Kevin Harris, a friend and mentor to The Urban Barber Association. Literacy is crucial for survival in this competitive world. To aid in the development of reading in children and adults we have implemented the I READ I LEAD Literacy Program.
The core mission of the I READ I LEAD Literacy Program is to make reading a central and vital part of the lives of children and adults. In seeking to fulfill this programs mission, The Urban Barber Association has partnered with students from Cleveland State University.
Together we have created a reading development curriculum for all age groups that integrate skills instruction and meaningful experience with good books. We have made space in our businesses that is for adults who want to learn to read during school hours and grade school children from grades K-6 after school hours.
The I READ I LEAD Literacy Program has four stages to it. The first stage is reading basics. This is primarily for the inexperienced reader, mostly children 4 or 5 years old, however a surprisingly large amount of adults does not know how to read *(Ohio: 12%, Cuyahoga County: 17% and National: 14%).
The second stage is the fluency stage. This is where a rhythm or flow is developed with reading. The third is the sponge stage. After fluency this stage is where absorption or reading comprehension is developed through quizzes and explanatory discussion about the reading material. Finally the challenge stage will enhance all of the former stages with repetition, which is the father of learning.
Some businesses host adults only, some host children only, and some have both. The I READ I LEAD Literacy Program is always looking for qualified individuals to help out in some capacity to help people learn how to read. *National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL) http://nces.ed.gov/naal/estimates/StateEstimates.aspx
